The Reporters (complete 15,000 word fiction)

Six days to election day Mayor Eridmond played what he was sure would be his killing blow to his main opponent. ‘As appreciation for Adam’s support’ he said as he slipped a flash drive across the table towards Drew. Mayor Eridmond had invited Drew to lunch at the Olive Tree which is the top restaurant in the city.

Not a capital city like London or Paris but a second rate sprawling city in the hinterland that once flourished in an industrial era long past. A city where the tightly packed terraces of mill workers cottages now had a rundown look. Surplus homes whose sole purpose is to house surplus people.

Geoff Willcott, Mayor Eridmond’s closest rival, would be a laughing stock when the other newspapers picked up the story in the coming days.

Drew is lead reporter on The Herald — the national newspaper owned by Adam Black. Clearly not a one time event the flash drive contained photos of Geoff Willcott crossdressed at home relaxing in his garden, getting out of a car and partying at several clubs.

‘These will boost tomorrows circulation, perhaps take Willcott out of the running, serve the little pervert right’ Adam Black said, ‘I want this one page one, 200 words’ he said pointing to a picture taken in the club showing Willcott with his arm around a blonde woman, ‘sort of neutral copy Drew…and get on with tracking down the hooker in the pictures’

For once he did not want his name beneath the front page lead article, Drew wished Abi was not on holiday, if she had been at work it would be her story, her name in the footnote. Abi joined The Herald four months ago supposedly as junior reporter but Adam always made sure his daughter had the byline under top stories even when Drew had put in the initial footwork.

‘OK, you want to approve copy?’ Drew asked

Adam said ‘I’ll trust you to make sure we come out clean on this’

Drew knew it was Adam’s way of saying he wanted a discreet hatchet job done, The Herald could not be seen as anything other than impartial in politics. Drew had interviewed Geoff Willcott several times during the run up to the mayoral elections. Similar ages they had gotten on well and, even though he could not show it in editorial, Drew liked his policies. Drew wanted to get some background on the crossdressing thing.

With nothing but an empty apartment waiting Drew sent the pictures to his phone and set off to speak to Geoff Willcott as his phone went straight to voicemail and a text remained unanswered.

Drew pressed the doorbell and as if she had been waiting for someone a woman immediately opened the door. His reporters eye took in every detail, she was barefoot, casually dressed wearing a sloppy tee, joggers, makeup free, auburn hair swept back in a high pony, blue eyes.  Drew introduced himself and apologised for disturbing her at home.

‘Diane Willcott, Geoff should be back soon’ the mystery woman from the photographs said, ‘please come in’

Drew sat at the breakfast bar on one side of the kitchen island, he was keen to tie up this interview quickly and start the long drive home but knew rushing would only end with him missing the story. He let his reporters instincts take control and relaxed as Diane made them coffee. Drew casually asked about how she coped with her husbands hectic life in the mayoral race, how it impacted on their family life.

Diane pulled a stool out and sat facing Drew ‘so Drew tell me…what is so urgent you needed to speak to Geoff tonight?’

‘With the Mayoral election days away we have published all there is to say about each candidates political angles. I am looking for personal interest stories…I know this is a cheesy thing to say Mrs Willcott but I think we have we met before, in a nightclub perhaps?’

‘Please, call me Diane’ she said to gain some thinking space.

‘No, come to think of it the woman I’m thinking of had blonde hair’

———//———

Adam was reading aloud as Drew sat in his office:

Diane and Geoff…his feminine side helps him understand the needs of female voters…modern accepting society…

‘What the fuck is this Drew? I send you on a simple hatchet story and you sing the praises of the candidate who minces around gay clubs in women’s clothes. Why didn’t you just sink the fucking hatchet in my back’ Adam was shouting so loud that everyone several offices away would be able to hear, ‘my mistake…’ Adam shrugged, ‘I can feel it still between my shoulder blades’

‘It’s his wife in the picture Adam and she is fully supportive’ Drew had anticipated a little backlash but this was much worse, ‘how would it look…’

‘ID card and phone’ Adam held out his hand, ‘you have gone too far this time’

If it had been possible Abi would have taken even more care than usual with her look, she was wearing a tight top with low neckline and short skirt, both purchased especially, when she called at Drew’s apartment at the end of her first day back from holiday. Abi knew his eyes would wander when she looked around the room or down at her phone.

She smiled what Drew would take as her ‘nice to see you’ smile but in reality it was the thought of how easy it was to manipulate men like Drew that made her smile. Abi softly cursed at the lack of an answer to her repeated knocking and wanting him to know she had taken the trouble to drive to his apartment she pushed a note through the letter plate suggesting they meet for coffee.

Still dripping from the shower Drew peeped through the viewer in his door just in time to see the lift door closing with Abi inside. He waited long enough for any chance of Abi returning to pass then texted: OK

Even though she always called her father Adam Abi said ‘I know how unreasonable daddy can be, I’m on your side Drew…’ she let her fingertips rest as lightly as a spiders legs on his forearm, as a sign of flirty friendliness, while they sat chatting over coffee.

This was just like Abi Drew thought, she had pretended to be a friend from day one, always blaming Adam whenever Drew was taken off a story that Abi thought might advance her career, blaming Adam when Drew voiced an idea and then she was given the job, blaming Adam when his name was left off of bylines on joint stories.

The next time Drew met Abi she said ‘You know Mayor Eridmond and Adam blame you for Willcott’s last minute election success’ she paused for effect as she glanced down at her coffee cup knowing full well that Drew’s eyes would be drawn down to her braless breasts that strained against the thin material of her top, ‘Eridmond barely scraped in and he blames you’

Abi glanced up fast enough to see Drew’s eyes flick up. ‘I’m writing an article about discrimination against LGBT people in politics, first of an ongoing series of articles that will demonstrate how importantly The Herald takes supporting the rights of LGBT people. Adam is still pissed by what you did but sees the milage in The Herald being supportive’

‘In fact your misconduct’ Abi said as she smiled and placed “misconduct” in double air quotes ‘has done The Herald a real favour, despite Willcott coming close second in the polls he is still a powerful public figure, when I interviewed him as the results came in he made it clear he considers both you and the paper allies. I said to Adam now that the Eridmond thing is history he should continue courting favour with Willcott and forgive you’

‘Doubt that will happen’ Drew said, ‘I’ll soon need to begin looking for another job, I have been waiting to see what Adam would do before I start looking’

‘That would be a shame, The Herald is not the same without you Drew’ Abi took a sip of coffee, ‘I miss you…well everyone does of course’ then, as if the idea had just come into her head she added ‘why not do a couple of paragraphs on the male take for the discrimination series I’m writing. I’ll slip it in tomorrows paper, agree with all of your views of course, make sure you get the byline, and mention to Adam what a great angle you came up with to help me out, then say other papers have heard you might be available…you know how he hates the competition sniffing around’

Without warning Abi looked sad and worried  ‘daddy I need you to get Drew back on payroll before it is too late’ she let her smile return ‘Adam won’t turn his little Abi down will he Drew?’

———//———

Drew had been back at The Herald for a month and right from the first day he had realised that rather than senior and junior reporter he and Abi had become more like equals. Abi’s LGBT articles had drawn plenty of favourable online comments and The Herald was fast becoming something of a flag-waver for LGBT rights. Not just an occasional article, Ali and Drew’s joint project was heading towards becoming a full page regular feature.

Abi and Drew were both at their desks working on regular stories when, out of the blue, Abi said ‘you two have talked plenty, what do you think got Geoff Willcott started with his dressing up?’

Barely paying attention Drew said ‘that is a great angle’ as he typed, ‘would make a great feature if we could get enough people to interview’

‘Internet is full of men and women trying to tell their stories’ Abi had stopped typing, ‘you should check them out…we had a dressing up box when I was little’ she paused and Drew looked up. ‘I always chose a dress that I used to think made me a princess…you and your sister ever dress up?’

‘Sometimes..all children do, don’t they?’ Drew said as Abi’s phone rang.

‘New angle on the housing story, gotta go…’ Abi said as she grabbed her purse.

Abi arrived at the weekly reporters ideas meeting wearing a mens check Ben Sherman shirt, Chinos and what looked like mens Oxford shoes. Her make-up consisted of a thin black eyeliner and barely visible smokey eyes. Drew discreetly looked and wondered where Abi’s breasts were hiding.

‘I never thought you would go through with it. You look perfect’ Adam said with a smile.

Abi explained her plan to the meeting. To experience discrimination first hand she would walk in, a woman clearly dressed in mens clothes, and try to register as a temp at a couple of the employment agencies in the city, ‘my first undercover job’ Abi said with a smile ‘thankfully I have had Drew mentoring me and his undercover experience to draw on. At times I got the feeling that Drew was wishing it was him preparing to go undercover but as the bosses daughter I get to go first…no hard feelings Drew?’

———//———

‘How did it go?’ Drew asked when Abi walked into the office, it was the first time they had been in the office at the same time since her days undercover and Drews calls had gone unanswered.

Abi looked defeated as she explained the lack of a story, ‘employment agencies were really helpful and I was offered work placements without any fuss’

‘At least it is good that crossdressed people are not treated differently nowadays’ Drew said putting a positive spin on her success at getting work offers and failure to get a story.

‘You mean women Drew, we can get away with wearing anything. A man wearing women’s clothes would be a whole new ballgame’ Abi corrected, then smiled ‘hey Drew, you like dressing up…’

Drew felt his heart beat a little faster, he would refuse. Well of course he would but the idea of…

His phone rang, the subject dropped and, seemingly forgotten, the day continued as any other.

The following week slipped past during which Drew had, countless times, thought about not just wearing women’s clothes but being out in public wearing them.

When he had his reporters head on Drew began making lists:

How much fetish and arousal were unspoken reasons people like Mayor Willcott and those who commented online began to crossdress.

How many have to crossdress just to feel normal.

Giving up.

Reasons why? — He added the notes to the list on his personal phone.

‘You dating at the moment?’ Abi asked as she walked along the corridor a few days later.

‘No, you need a plus one for something?’

‘Perhaps, I’ll let you know’ Abi smiled and continued walking. Drew heard Adam’s door close.

———//———

They headed out on an assignment together, Abi driving, Drew shotgun. Abi was in one of her full of enthusiasm moods. Drew thought she had probably pulled off a big story and now with him a captive audience she was getting ready to crow about it.

‘Have you thought any more about going undercover?’ Abi said without any preamble

Drew had been waiting, hoping every day that Abi would bring it up, now he was playing it cool making notes on his phone as if he had not heard.

‘Planet Earth calling ace reporter Drew’ Abi was loud enough to command attention, ‘have you thought any more about going undercover?’ She smiled ‘show the beginner how the expert gets his results’

‘We talking about that crossdressing idea of yours here Abi?’

‘Of course. I’ve pitched our idea to Adam, he is good with it’

‘I can’t do it Abi’ Drew said, he buzzed down his window, ‘I don’t have an issue with it, it is only clothes after all but the guys I room with are real old school piss takers. I expect your friends thought nothing of you dressing as a man, probably even said how they admired you I expect. It’s different for me, my roommates are true Neanderthals, they think only those who deserved it in the first place complain about discrimination. I have to bite my tongue when they start. I would be a laughing stock in every pub in the city’

‘Well you already have an article outlined right there in that mini speech, it wouldn’t suit The Herald but would be perfect for some gay pride rag’ Abi said then turned the radio on. A few minutes passed as they listened to the classical station then Abi turned the radio off ’you know I room with two other girls’ Abi said as Drew nodded ‘well Naomi is in France for summer. Why don’t you take her room for the weekend Drew, Pam and I can help you try it out. You will like Pam’

‘That would solve my roommate issue and give me a chance to get comfortable wearing a dress’

‘Don’t get too comfortable I’m only suggesting a weekend’ Abi giggled,’You know we need the angle for the series, I’m glad you are man enough to give it a try plus it will be good for both of our careers. No other papers have done anything like it yet.

Drew stayed quiet as if considering for a few seconds ‘you are right, you ask Pam if it’s OK meanwhile I’ll do some online research’ Abi glanced across and they exchanged smiles as Drew said ‘and I’ll finally get to see that swanky penthouse where you live,

Abi pulled the car into the parking lot. They had destinated. Abi said ‘remember when you told me that first day I started at The Herald “a good reporter will do anything to get the story” I thought it was just talk to impress me back then, now I know different. You know Drew when I can’t sleep some nights I imagine myself as a big shot editor some day telling the rookie reporters about how the famous Drew took me under his wing when I was in their shoes, how he led from the front’ she giggled ‘right out in front, tottering along in heels’

———//———

Drew pushed the button and rode the elevator to the top floor. Adam paid Abi’s share of rent for the apartment after Abi graduated college. As she let him in Drew’s eyes took in the panoramic views across the city that fought with the stylish interior for attention. He had met Pam a few days earlier to break the ice.

Right from the get go Pam had come across as confident and bubbly, giggling with Abi about them having their very own life size doll for the weekend.

Without any hint of discretion Pam eyed Drew toe to head as he walked in the coffee shop and intently watched his every move as they sat in the café with their teas.

‘I’m pretty sure some of Naomi’s things will fit Drew’ Pam said.

‘Won’t she mind?’ Drew said

‘Who will tell her’ Abi said adding a smile

‘Naomi is very fashion conscious Drew, they will be last seasons and she will take most to goodwill when she comes home’ Pam said with a smile.

‘What about underwear?’ Drew said

‘Abi can pick up some cheap new undies…’ Pam said before Abi cut her off

‘Did you want to wear Naomi’s panties as well Drew, we won’t tell her’ Abi said as she finished Pam’s sentence with a smirk

‘Really Abi?’ Pam said pulling a stern look. All three of them were early to mid twenty somethings but Pam carried the air of being the one in-charge. ‘I must apologise for Abi’s childish and inappropriate remark’ Pam looked Drew in the eyes and smiled ‘as I was saying, Abi can get you undies from a discount store’

———//———

Drew was both nervous and excited in equal amounts as he exited the lift. First thing that morning he had gone through the most painful experience of his life as a result of a ‘friendly tip’ from Abi that hairy legs would be hell under hose. Drew had replied that one of the most common themes online was removal of body hair either as a first step before putting on women’s clothes or as a fantasy in feminisation scenarios.

‘Good point Drew, you do that before Saturday’ Abi said ‘you are researching feminisation as well now?’

‘Not on purpose, you know how the net is Abi — a search for watersports does not tell you about bodyboarding or skiing’ they both laughed, ‘you cannot imagine what I had to wade through, just you try searching for man wearing dress’

After a couple of nicks with the first swipe of his razor Drew gave up and booked himself in for a full body wax. He had added to the notes “sore from the wax; clothes feel different; make notes about how hose feels; feeling as hair comes back?”

He pressed the voice recorders stop button, a personal project he could run alongside had begun to form in his mind and like all good reporters he would tell no-one of his idea. Many reporters said they were writing a book that never materialised, Drew did not want to swell their ranks.

Abi opened the door ‘this way Drew, Naomi’s room where you’ll sleep’ he led him straight into a bedroom ‘shower is through there, clean towels in the bathroom, I’ll leave you to it’

‘Really Abi? No cup of tea or even say hello to Pam?’

‘You are here on work Drew, plenty of time for socialising after you change’ Abi said with a smile as she shut the door behind her

Naomi’s room, like the other two bedrooms, had its own bathroom. There was a new pair of big white panties with store tags still attached on top of the towel. Once showered he pulled the tags and slipped the panties on.

Feeling a little too exposed in just the panties Drew wrapped a dry towel around his waist and stepped out into Naomi’s bedroom, opening the door he called out ‘I’m showered Abi, where are the clothes?’

‘Are you decent?’

‘I put a towel around me as well’ he called back, pushed the door to and began folding his clothes.

‘Can I come in?’ Pam said as she tapped lightly on the door. Leaving the door ajar and standing just inside the room she passed Drew a bra ‘hope you don’t mind me helping, Abi was a bit creeped out at the idea of seeing her coworker wearing so little’

Pam noticed Drews blush but said nothing, she was just about to help him hitch the back when Drew loosened the shoulder straps, slipped his arms in and let the material slide through his fingers as he moved his hands behind his back and hitch the fasteners. To hide her knowing smile she looked down and pretended to read the details on the pack of hose she still held.

‘What next Pam?’

‘Oh you managed’ Pam said as she looked up, ‘those little hooks can be difficult, you can never have enough beginners luck’ she held out the pack of pantyhose, ‘pop these on while I find a dress’

Walking over to the closet Pam was behind Drew, she watched as he sat on the edge of the bed and put the hose on. She took out two dresses that hung side by side, smirked, then said ‘this or this…tell me which do you prefer Drew?’ Before he could answer Pam quietly said ’I want you to wear this green dress’ she watched as Drew zipped the back and hooked the top.

‘But you two aren’t wearing heels’ Drew said, a whiney element barely detectable in his voice as he looked at the heels that sat in-front of the sofa.

Pam watched and added “knows heels are uncomfortable” to the rapidly growing list in her head of interesting facts she knew about Drew.

‘This is supposed to be a practice weekend, the shoes are same style as I wear to work, men force us to wear heels and makeup every day, everything takes practise’ Abi listed in quick succession marking each point my holding up fingers. Taking his hand for support Abi led Drew towards the shoes, ’if nothing else you will know what we go through to look good for men’

‘But I’m not going out why would I need shoes and makeup?’

‘Of course we need to do some makeup for you, well, a girl doesn’t feel dressed without’ Abi smiled, ’Pam is making a drink, lets have our tea first’ she paused as he stepped into the heels, moved closer and using a low voice said, ‘why don’t I suggest it so that Pam does not realise you asked me to do your makeup’

———//———

Abi’s bedroom door burst open, she wore a little summer dress with ‘box fresh’ white sneakers saying that she needed to get some things at the mall ‘do you want to come Drew or would you rather hang here?’ he chose staying in the apartment, ‘I promised to do a daytime face for Drew…would you mind Pam?’

‘Can you put the tea things in the dishwasher while I get ready to do your makeup’ Pam said, ’you can stop that right now’ there was no smile in her tone, her eyes locked on Drews, ’that fake wobbling about on heels might fool Abi as she didn’t spot your nimble fingers expertly hitch your bra or notice how easily you slid the hose up your legs without snagging them or putting a finger through’ she paused to allow Drew to reflect on the implication, ‘I could be your confidante, do you think you can trust me’

‘It wasn’t until I was catching the little hook at the top of my dress I realised how much I had revealed to you, every time you began speaking I’ve been afraid you would out me to Abi’ Drew smiled from relief, ‘thank you Pam, I accept your kind offer’

‘Your dress?’ Pam giggled ‘that is Naomis favourite dress, Naomi was my favourite roommate. You remind me of her apart from one thing, that is why I decided you would wear it’ Pam smiled, ‘there…now I am making you my confidante’

Pam explained what she was about to do at each stage as she quickly applied makeup to one side of Drew’s face then let him loose ‘all done’ Drew said with a smile, ‘it’s not that difficult…well I’m sure you know that already’

Pam had intended to pretend-reading a magazine, instead she told Drew about a boyfriend that enjoyed little bedroom games, the part she least enjoyed was watching him struggle to dress and before he became as proficient as Drew they had parted. Without warning she looked up and burst out laughing as she grabbed her phone and snapped a picture ‘I need a record of your first attempt before you try again’

Drew joined Pam in laughing ‘I know it is a bit different, it has been a while Pam’ as he used the removal wipes. Second time Pam guided him offering guidance at each step. Over and over Drew applied, removed, applied, removed and so on all the while sort of listening to Pam the way a man does.

‘I am a bit controlling, well I expect Abi told you, controlling in a nice way of course especially with men. I expect you like confident women’

Realising the talking had stopped Drew said ‘sorry’

‘I want you to listen when I speak Drew’ Pam said, ‘I expect you like confident women’

Noticing that Pam was watching him in the mirror Drew nodded.

‘Now take it all off, that’s it both sides’ Pam said with a smile, your hair is to die for Drew…you are so lucky, can’t wait to see it out of that hipster pony some day’

‘My family are Japanese so I have my heritage to thank for thick hair’ Drew said

‘Jet black and some shape’ Pam said to herself as she thumbed her phone.

Thankful the lessons were finally over Drew relaxed a little and said ‘that wasn’t too bad, I’m ready for a nice cup of tea’

‘Abi said you can be a little slow sometimes’ Pam smiled ‘so sweet you think you are finished…now put your face on’

‘I hope Abi explained that I am only trying this dressing thing out for the weekend’

‘Abi thinks this is your first time?’

‘I put it all behind me before I came to the city, the clock is reset Pam so yes, this really is my first time’

‘Of course it is, little games people play outside the city don’t count do they’ Pam smiled

Without anything to guide him he was back to the start with his makeup. Once more Drew applied, removed, applied, removed and so on. Drew wondered how women managed to carry on a conversation at the same time, then completely messed an eyeliner up as his mind replayed Pam’s dressing up games comment.

‘That is OK for now’ Pam declared, ‘you mentioned tea, why not remove your makeup then make a pot’

As they sat drinking their tea Pam mentioned that Abi thought she could do things better than other people ‘that is why I wanted to teach you how to put your own makeup on, perhaps as we are on our own I can say “refresh your memory” I hope you don’t mind Drew’

‘Just between us Abi can be bossy at The Herald sometimes Pam, and I do not mean nice bossy’

‘Nice bossy?’

‘Not bossy in a nice way like you’ Drew said

‘You are OK with that?’

Drew knew he was blushing ‘I think I am’

‘I want you to stay for the weekend’ Pam asked.

‘Are you asking or telling?’ Drew said

‘Don’t look so worried Drew, remember your secrets are safe with me’ Pam smiled, ‘now would you like me to ask or would you prefer me to tell you?’

Drew’s red face matched his lips as he said ‘I would like you to tell me’

‘Great, now we both understand. We can let others believe that what may sound like suggestions my are instructions’

Pam smiled and explained her plan, ‘when Abi gets back we will teach her a lesson’

———//———

Abi cheek kissed Pam, said ‘Hi’ to Drew who was sitting on the sofa typing on his personal phone then turned back to Pam and silently mouthed ‘makeup’ and raised an eyebrow.

Pam said ‘you must be ready for a nice cup of tea Abi, are you busy Drew?’

Drew had been making a point of looking busy while waiting for the signal ‘let me make the tea, I need the bathroom first though’ nerves kicked in as Drew tried to remember what to do and the order in which to put on his makeup. Finally satisfied with his look he stepped to the toilet and reached down to unzip without thinking, he did a little giggle as he hitched up his dress, lowered hose then panties before being able to finally sit.

A genuine smile spread across Abi’s face and even her eyes crinkled a little bit at the corners as she looked at Drew. For the first time ever Abi kissed Drew on the cheek then as she gave him a three Mississippi hug Drew glanced at Pam who wore a similar smile.

‘You look perfect, just perfect’ Abi said as she held Drew at arms length, then turning toward Pam said ’how did you manage that?’

‘Drew just needed some fine tuning’ Pam smiled, ‘did I ever tell you the story about one summer, I was twelve or thirteen at the time, we looked after a neighbours unruly Labrador and when the neighbours came to collect him two weeks later the dog was so well behaved they thought I had switched him. In a couple of hours I had him walking perfectly on a lead, look how perfectly I have gotten your coworker putting on his own makeup today Abi’

Just like the Labrador had obeyed Pam Drew turned side to side for inspection.

Pam smiled ‘he is a surprisingly fast learner Abi, I wonder if you have made a decision wether to go undercover Drew’

‘Your help today Pam has given me the confidence to say yes, I will’ Drew said

‘I am so happy’ Abi began doing little toe hops like a teenager ‘makeup and heels are the hardest and you’ve totally killed it with the makeup’ she snapped a picture and began prodding at her phone, ’Adam said you wouldn’t have the nerve to go undercover…now we will show him Drew’

‘No way am I ready to go undercover Abi’ Drew said in a firm voice. He let the silence stretch, Pam was hiding her giggles behind her hand.

‘But I thought…’

Drew cut her off ‘just look’ he said raising one leg ‘Abi, I could not wear those heels a second longer’ Abi finally noticed he was barefoot ‘or any shoes that small, my feet are already sore’

The atmosphere in the apartment was electric, either everyone spoke at once or no-one spoke at all. Abi and Drew exchanged reporter ideas while Pam listed out areas that Drew would need to practice. Pam and Abi passed an iPhone back and forwards between them.

‘I know it wasn’t the plan but you really should go out before Monday’ Abi said, ‘perhaps just shopping for an hour or two tomorrow to make sure you don’t get stage fright before everything is finalised with Adam’ she smiled, ‘we can find some comfortable shoes for you’

‘Drew will need some practice Abi, you saw how unsteady he was in just low heels’ Pam said

———//———

They spent the morning wandering the mall then, shoes purchased they had lunch in the food hall. Pam and Abi left Drew at the table while they went to the restroom. Drew had avoided drinking anything since breakfast — using the women’s restroom on day one in such a busy public place presented too much of a challenge.

Being dressed as a woman did not stop Drew’s head from manly thoughts, he took full advantage of being free to look around. A young woman at the next table leant over in his direction as she sorted out her child’s meal. Drew could see right down her top, he was ready for a nasty comment or at least a glare when she glanced up and saw him looking.

‘Kids ‘eh?’ cleavage woman said as she smiled at Drew.

Drew pulled a big smile right back at her pleased that dressing as a woman gave him license to openly check out women. He resumed checking out the other diners, eyes met, smiles were exchanged and so it went on. Drew was in no hurry for Pam and Abi to return. No first day out stage fright, he was having fun.

He was openly scoping out the food hall when a man in his fifties turned away from the counter carrying a coffee, he smiled, Drew sort of half smiled and looked towards the restrooms just as Abi touched Pam’s arm, said something and they began giggling. They had stopped walking, both Abi and Pam held their phones in videoing pose. They panned across to the left, Drew turned his head to see what they were filming.

‘Thought I might have to drink this standing as it is so busy here’ the man with the coffee said as he sat, ‘I was so pleased to see a friendly smile, where do I know you from?’

Drew kept his voice low while using what he imagined was a feminine voice ‘I don’t think we have met’

‘Then let me introduce myself, Reginald’ he held out a hand

‘Drew’ he said as he glanced toward the restrooms. Pam was a few steps closer, Abi had moved to one side giving her a clear view of both faces, perhaps even close enough for audio. Reginald was in full pulling mode, his fingertips touched Drew’s forearm as he spoke. Drew shuffled a little to put space between them as he let Reginald lead the conversation using one word replies or head movements.

Drew was trapped, terrified that he was about to be outed, would Reginald make a scene he wondered. Drew breathed a sigh of relief as he looked up to see Pam said standing in the aisle. Abi was still several paces away engrossed in videoing.

‘I wondered where you had gotten to Pam…I have to go’ Drew said

‘Are you going to introduce me to your friend Drew?’ Pam said making no effort to hide her amusement

Introductions complete Drew began shuffling out of the booth. Reginald’s left hand darted out and like a magician produced a pen and wrote his number on Drew’s palm.

‘Don’t forget your purse’ Pam said as Drew stood. As he slipped the purse over his shoulder he saw the red flashing light and recognised Abi’s voice recorder.

———//———

‘Don’t be so grumpy’ Abi said as they all sat on the sofa ‘who always says a good reporter observes and, without interfering, reports what he sees?’ Abi pulled the smirk-smile she uses when she knows she is right ‘Drew says that, that’s who’

‘The pupil has become the master’ Drew said matching her smirk-smile ‘now I want to hear how badly I handled that, send me a copy of the video and audio file’

‘What is all the fuss about we were close enough to rescue you in a heartbeat’ Pam said, ‘you needed to learn lesson one which is not to give out ‘come on’ signs to men. I can see you are going to be a star’ Pam let a giggle loose and glanced at Abi, ‘once we get that flirty side under control’

‘Shooting star’ Drew interjected ‘they shine bright for a brief moment in time…’

‘Do all reporters spout such nonsense Abi?’ Pam said

‘He really is a star reporter, especially undercover’ Abi had switched to being sincere, ‘taught me so much and still is Pam’

‘OK star reporter, interview me’ Pam said

‘You know how I love role play. Drew you have met Pam in a café and you want to write an article about her job. Pam you are a travel agent’ Abi said as she put two seeming cups of tea opposite sides of the dining table and sat on the sofa with her tea, ‘Pam you are surprised but secretly pleased a big shot reporter has asked you to help him…action’

‘Can I order some food for you Ms….’

‘Please, call me Pam and just tea is fine’

‘Do you mind if I record our chat rather than take notes Pam?’

‘Go right ahead, what do you want to know?’

‘I am researching how online sales are affecting the travel industry, how long have you been in your current job Pam?’

‘I joined my current company straight after graduating’

‘What college did you go to?’

‘Cambridge’

‘My friend Bill Smith was at Cambridge, he was a few years below me, about your age I’m guessing, he is 24 now. Did your paths cross Pam?’

‘I don’t think so, he would have been above me, I’m 22. Was he a friend with anyone in Jon Greens group?’

‘I have heard Bill talk about John Green and his mates, are you still in touch with John or any of the others?’ Drew said

Abi cut in ‘when are you going to notice what he is doing?’ Abi and Drew exchanged smiles ‘he has not asked a single question about your job Pam’

‘It just felt like chatting to a friendly stranger at a coffee shop’ Pam said

Before Drew headed back to his own apartment Abi suggested that Drew take the new heels back  and practiced walking in them ‘you need to get used to them enough to be able to wear heels all day just like me’

‘Walking across a room is not enough’ Pam said then said that he should get some outdoors experience coping with uneven pavements, curbs and stairs. Abi asked if Pam could help Drew if she had time. Pam was either very kind to Drew who was a near stranger to her or she had her reasons for wanting to be with him while Abi was not there, either way Drew needed to find out sooner rather than later.

Pam readily agreed to help out Abi and Drew as that had been her plan all along. They made arrangements for Drew to start practising the following morning. Abi would cover for his absence suggesting she invent a story that he was investigating.

‘No need’ Drew said ‘just say I’m finalising open stories’

———//———

Abi and Drew attended a final meeting with Adam. They both listened as Adam reconfirmed that Drew and Abi’s plan was not to mention the undercover operation to any staff ‘you know how they gossip Drew. I don’t want word getting out, we have temps here as well so we need to be ultra careful. You still haven’t even come up with full details of your plan’

‘I assumed we were going with me acting as a crossdresser for interviews and temp jobs, pretending in order to go undercover’ Drew said

‘That is what I thought as well, just like I did for those few days’ Abi said ‘and everyone knows it’s trannies that suffer the worst, you only have to look online Adam’

‘Sorry to pour cold water on your plans. Legal are insisting that I kill that idea, it is too sketchy, they were worried enough when you did your lesbian act without running it past them. Now they are super worried if any of the LGBT groups find out Drew’s thing is a ruse as well they will crucify us’ Adam said, they will find and use what you did as well Abi. I can see our competitors front pages already: The Herald manipulating LGBT rights for their own ends. You tell me how would that look Abi’

‘We have put too much effort in to back out now daddy’ Abi said playing her ace ‘I want to do this as much as Drew does’ Abi rummaged in a folder she was holding and threw a bunch of stills from the videos taken at the mall on the desk, ‘that is how committed Drew and I are’

Adam’s telephone rang giving Drew and Abi a few moments to speak quietly, Adam still heard snippets and as he ended the call said ‘Abi is right Drew, she has played the ‘daddy card’ unless you have anything else to add I think the best thing is to go with legals advice and forget the whole idea’

‘Starting Monday I am going to live my life as I want’ Drew said, he glanced at Abi who gave a little smile, ‘…am going to live as the woman I have been hiding inside me regardless of what you decide, I need to add my voice to the others trying to stop the discrimination Adam’

Adam sat in silence while he considered The Herald’s position, ‘I had not understood you felt this way Drew, please accept my apology. Rest assured The Herald and I will do everything possible to help you settle in. If you would like to put your personal plan and the plan for the series of articles in writing, explain why you want to investigate I will pass it to legal with my full support. I expect they will insist, as usual, that you are reclassified as freelance’

‘At least you don’t have any worries about money Drew’ Abi said as they took the elevator down to level four, ‘with Pam giving you free use of Naomi’s room so that you don’t have to face your roommates and with my support as well we can do this. Temps get paid well plus I can help you out, Adam never even looks at my company credit card statement’

‘Get real Abi, two weeks, four at the outside — you are talking like its forever’

‘Sorry — after that speech to Adam about coming out as transgender’ Abi smirk-laughed, ‘you know how much support you got with just that one off Geoff Willcott article. This is going to be huge for us and the paper, I can feel it can’t you. Even Pam says…’

‘Undercover crossdresser Abi, transgender is a whole different thing’ Drew said, ‘what does Pam say?’

Abi did not reply. Drew repeated ‘what does Pam say?’

‘It is like she is taking control of the whole thing — Naomi’s old room is empty, I can train puppies, Drew is just like a puppy, you can’t expect poor Drew to use his apartment with those awful roommates, poor Drew who will help him dress’

‘She is only being helpful Abi. You know what I think Abi? I think she is only letting me stay to help you and I am the price she has to pay’

It pisses me off Drew. ’Since that first day in the coffee shop she is always Drew could wear this, Drew this, Drew that, it never stops. Don’t pretend you didn’t notice she was hitting on you from the moment you walked in the coffee shop’ Abi smiled, ‘and don’t think for a second I have not noticed you basking in it’

‘OK Abi I admit I do like the attention, it has been a while since a woman took any interest in me and I had forgotten how good it feels like be wanted…now I’m sounding super needy’ Drew let a nervous laugh out

‘I had always thought you didn’t know how needy you sound’ Abi was smiling, ‘will you snub Pam like you did me that time Drew?’ Abi blushed, ‘sorry Drew, I was totally out of order to say that. She can be a bit manipulative at times thats all I’m saying’

Drew spent the remaining days in the reporters office tidying loose ends of ongoing stories, sounding out a few temp agencies that specialised in office workers in preparation for going undercover. In preparation he had booked out a pool car on his half day.

The bra that he had worn with some scrunched up hose to give shape would not do, not wanting to rely on Abi or Pam Drew had decided to make his own preparations. He signed out the pool car and headed out of the city towards the shopping mall that was one town over from where he grew up.

The sales assistant smiled as he opened the door, ran from behind the counter and threw her arms around Drew for a hug that lasted six Mississippis. Finally letting the breath back in to him Angela kissed his cheek.

‘Drew, never thought I would see you back here’ she giggled ‘I expect a thousand times more drug dealers say that than lingerie store owners’

‘Can I use that’ Drew’s smile stretched ear to ear as he parroted; I expect a thousand times more drug dealers say that than lingerie store owners, ‘are you writing still Angela?’

Angela nodded a yes ‘social call or are you in remission?’

Drew outlined the reasons for his visit as Angela flipped the door sign to ‘closed’

With Angela’s help Drew had made good and bad choices.

Good that he had purchased all he needed.

Bad as the size of receipt in his pocket would send Adam into a fit. Better to let Abi submit it he thought with a smile.

Drew’s undercover jacket would not do, it had a concealed microphone and wire for a digital recorder. He found the perfect equivalent item for a female undercover reporter online from a company that specialised in supplying investigators, an over the shoulder purse from a well known manufacturer, stylish and just the right size for a day purse, designed to be worn across the body it had been fitted with a microphone concealed in the clasp and tiny voice operated digital recorder inside. The surveillance purse was a private purchase.

———//———

With only a few days remaining before he went undercover Drew was called into Adam’s office for a meeting, Abi had warned him that both Legal and Human Resources would be present. As he was readying to leave his desk she said ‘don’t slip up Drew, remember to use the correct pronouns from now on, there’s a good girl’

Drew laughed, and said ‘I’m a bit old to be called a girl don’t you think?’

Abi laughed along ‘of course not, you will look a little sweetie come Monday. But seriously Drew, are you feeling nervous?’ Abi’s face turned serious as Drew nodded, ‘me too, all your secrecy over clothes and turning our help down is worrying me’

‘You should be grateful Pam is not interfering’ Drew smiled

’It’s still not too late if you want to back out Drew. If you are not 100% I will say I changed my mind, take the heat off you’

‘Thank you so much for the offer, you cannot imagine how good it makes me feel to know you have my back Abi. You know I think this project has brought us closer together, turned us from coworkers into workmates…needy Drew would say friends’ He smiled ‘every sleepless night I want to do just that, give up, then come morning my inner reporter kicks in’

‘Needy Drew can say what she wants, you’ll soon learn that rules are different on our side of the gender gap’ Abi said with a smile as she took a small makeup bag from her desk, ‘a gift from me, a little foundation might help you feel a little more confident in the meeting. I know I couldn’t face going in there naked, but you are your own woman now’ Abi smiled ‘or will be after the meeting, I still think girl is better…woman makes you sound so old, like thirty or something’

In final preparation for his days undercover Drew would work for a week in The Herald’s general office, reporters were considered god like beings in the general office and the staff were eager to train Drew in the ways of mere mortals. Unbeknown to Drew Abi had other ideas and briefed all of the office staff ‘Drew’s first week is going to be hard for her, you are to accept her. Let the message both Adam and I send to each of you be crystal clear; any inappropriate behaviour, even misusing pronouns will result in dismissal’

———//———

Drew arrived at Pam and Abi’s apartment in time for Sunday lunch wearing a hoodie, joggers and trainers. The few clothes he brought for his stay were in a suit carrier. Abi was having lunch at her parents home.

‘Your clothes are laid out on your bed’ Pam said.

‘Can I show you my work clothes?’ Drew said adding ‘please’

‘Abi and I were discussing how secretive you were being about what you would wear. I would love you to model them for me’ Pam said

It was the first time they had met for a couple of days although they had spoken many times each day by telephone as Pam preferred talking to texting. Drew put on the underwear purchased from Angela’s shop then slipped in the small forms before putting on his suit and stepping into his new black heels.

‘I hope you like it, I’m so excited, I ordered it from Japan Pam’ Drew said, Pam gasped as he did a twirl for her. He smiled, ‘it is called an interview suit’

Pam took a couple of pictures and spent some minutes sending the head and shoulders picture somewhere. By the time she had finished Drew had hung the interview suit in the closet and changed into the dress that Pam had left out for him.

‘We will eat later, would you like to make us a sandwich for lunch?’ Pam said. As they ate lunch Pam said ‘something is happening Drew, Abi has been very secretive this week. It is not like her to close her door to use the telephone. When your name comes up in conversation she now uses female pronouns and corrects me if I use he or him’

Drew said that he was OK with being ‘her, she’ and the reasons why. As they chatted he mentioned that he thought there was a new man in Abi’s life ‘the last few days at work she has been getting calls on her own mobile, giggling and whispering like a schoolgirl’

‘That’s it’ Pam said with a smile ‘I had wondered what was going on when I heard her laughing as well, not that I was listening’ there was a knock at the door ‘that will be Maddy, let her in for me there’s a good girl’ Pam giggled, ‘did I get that right?’

‘But I look…’ Drew began

‘Like a man in a dress without makeup and wearing your hair in a pony…’ Pam smiled ‘I would like you to trust me Glen’ Pam smiled ‘Maddy is my hair stylist’

‘No tranny, not even crossdresser would go out with hair like that…this is not 2010 you know’ Maddy said with a laugh as they sat drinking tea. As if silence was a crime against women Maddy filled every pause with an endless stream of words expecting, and getting, her customer to laugh along regardless of how politically incorrect her views were.

‘A typical stylist’ Pam whispered to Drew before Maddy came back from the bathroom, ‘thanks for coming at such short notice Maddy, Abi was supposed to be here this weekend to prepare Drew for work tomorrow but she has a new man’

‘Led by her pussy that girl’ Maddy laughed, ‘she really would have thrown Drew to the lions if you hadn’t stepped in to save the day Pam. Imagine him going into an office with hair like that, every other girl in the company will be taking in every little detail as if her life depends on it’ she took a rare pause for breath

‘Her, Drew needs to get used to being ‘she or her’ Pam interrupted

‘Well, after I saw the pictures you sent of the suit I did a bit of research’ Maddy smiled ‘let me see if I can turn him into something that warrants being called her, I mean even now he’s no dragzilla. Change into a bathrobe, go wash your hair and keep it wet while I get my stuff sorted’

‘Just what do you plan to do?’ Drew said ‘this is only for a short time’

‘Anyone who wears hose and heels at home on a Sunday does not deserve to have any input’ Maddy smiled ‘but I think a tidy, even out the colour. Don’t worry I can soon make you look like a man when you are ready, or should that be if not when?’

‘You concentrate on washing your hair Drew’ Pam said, ‘I will make sure Maddy knows what I like’

Hair seemed to take forever, a second wash, colour, another wash and condition, snip, snip, snip followed by ages with dryer. Drew was getting worried at the amount of hair that littered the floor of the bathroom.

‘A Berry Bob, a Japanese hairstyle just perfect for your Japanese face. What do you think? Silly me you can’t see the new you yet’ Maddy was talking of course as she fussed over the final details, ‘no peeking in a mirror somewhere Drew and spoiling the big reveal. I covered them for a reason, I want you to see you as the office will when you walk in. What is wrong with me today? I’ve already told you that, what must you think of me? Don’t put that dress back on when we are finished I want to see the full effect in the Japanese suit’ still not pausing for breath she called out, ‘we are ready for some tea Pam, I’ll do some polish for you while we drink our tea, slip your hose off’

‘Hands will be plenty, my shoes aren’t open toe Maddy’

‘Hear this Pam?’ Maddy parroted as they walked into the lounge ‘‘Hands will be plenty, my shoes aren’t open toe she says’ she paused talking as she slurped at her tea, ’No one will check to see if fingers and toes match when she kicks off her heels under the desk will they?’ The room suddenly felt eerily quiet as she took another slurp at her tea while opening her sales case ‘just deep enough burgundy lips and nails are so now for daytime’ Maddy said as she finished the last toe ‘and it’s on offer, you’ll buy the lippy, well of course you need to match nails, polish comes free’

Drew felt like he was listening to a radio program as Maddy’s chatter swept him along in the way he was sure she swept all of her other customers along as well. He imagined her capable of making customers believe what she did to their hair to be what they had wanted all along. His fingers were itching to get at the keyboard while Maddy was fresh in his mind. Her endless chatter as she tidied her things provided a soundtrack while Drew changed. He had a brainwave to capture the essence of Maddy, he slipped his purse across his body and discreetly pressed record.

‘Just where do you think you are going?’ Maddy said as she opened the bedroom door without knocking and walked in ‘face first Drew, only a man would do the big reveal half naked, here, let me’ He handed the makeup bag Abi had given him to Maddy, ‘that is a real beginners bag I expect your first few weeks wages will be spent at the cosmetic counter, only to be expected as you see what the other girls wear, I’ll show you how to do this Ebi-chan look for yourself before I go…there…now you look like a college grad ready for her first interview. You can always call in the salon if you are passing and want some ideas for a fresh look, perhaps a little less Japanese. Is that tea ready yet Pam? We’re coming out’ Pam began laughing ‘well Drew is…Isn’t she cute?’

———//———

‘I am so grateful for this Pam’ Drew said as they walked towards The Herald. Abi had sent a text late the night before saying she couldn’t get back to the apartment but would meet him at the usual coffee shop at lunchtime. Drew was relieved that when as soon as he told Pam she said that taking a bus and walking alone first day was probably going to be super scary and volunteered to accompany him. Drew noticed the distant photographer as they left the apartment. Drew smiled as the reason for Abi’s sudden change of plans at the last minute became apparent. It was a smart move.

He felt an inner pride that he had taught Abi well enough that she would have automatically planned something that could so easily be overlooked on her own initiative. Photographing a subject first day and at various stages was standard procedure on a story. Not standard procedure on undercover assignments but still good practice.

‘Remember everything we have practised Drew, you’ll be fine. There really is no need to worry, from what Abi said before we met I know you are well liked at work. As Abi said they have been told this is for real so I’m sure your coworkers, and especially the other girls in the office, will want to help you settle in’ Pam finished her little pep talk as they reached the entrance to The Herald, said goodbye and as they had practised Drew confidently leant in and they exchanged cheek kisses.

His mobile beeped before he reached the entrance, a message from Abi, he expected a message of reassurance ’YOUR HAIR!!! WTF - Be at coffee shop 1:00’

He noticed the photographer again across the street as he swiped his access card at the main door and stepped inside. On and off throughout the morning he wondered about the message. He heard his mobile beep mid morning and discreetly looked at a message from Pam, the first he had ever gotten from her ‘hope you are enjoying your day, did you see those guys giving you the eye? Abi is in a mood, she just phoned me. I will tell all later. Need  me to meet you from work? Let me know’ The phone beeped again ‘Now I feel awful. I didn’t mean anything by that comment about guys, just you look cute hair, heels, interview suit and all’

Drew flipped his mobile face down when he felt the presence of someone standing behind him. To his surprise and relief the morning passed without a single comment, as work stopped someone asked what he was doing for lunch and when he said he would be meeting Abi at the coffee shop the floodgates opened and the other women began gossiping all at once as they opened their lunchboxes.

‘Just like old times meeting up with the reporters’

‘Is that for old times sake Drew?’

‘You have to admit she is brave working out her notice here in our office’

As suddenly as the comments began they stopped and silence descended. Rebecca said ’we don’t have secrets in our office Drew, who were all those texts from?’

Drew was at his desk touching up his lipstick, ‘checking makeup is a sign of confidence’ was just one of the tips Pam had given Drew. He was wishing he had not hung around when they began talking.

He was still formulating a reply when Rebecca continued ‘you know the one Drew’ Rebecca smirked as she made sure she had the attention of the whole office, ‘the one where it said…you look cute hair, heels, interview suit and all’

One of the others called out from her cubicle ‘My guess is Danny from the post room, he can’t take his eyes off a certain new girl. Is it him Drew or are you keeping someone else secret from us?’

———//———

No ‘hello’ as Drew slipped in the booth opposite Abi ‘We did not agree this, why did you get your hair done Drew?’

“Hi Abi’ Drew said with a smile ‘after what Adam said I decided I needed to look the part for this job, not a reporter putting on women’s clothes looking for a story.

‘And the suit?’

‘Traditional attire for new employees in Japan, I ordered it online’

‘We are not in Japan…’

Drew cut her off ‘lets leave the race door shut shall we Abi. There is a problem, I need to ask Adam why the rest of the office think I am working out my notice.

‘No need to bother him. He already said you need to go to freelance, last week on a staff contract is always classed as notice period’ Abi smiled, ‘and you have me to thank for getting you transferred into the office where you can practice being a woman before heading out on assignment. Imagine how you would feel if this morning you had to step into an office of strangers’

‘I hadn’t even given that a thought, so far I have had a friendly face guiding me. Thank you, that was so thoughtful Abi. Now I’m fretting about the interviews with the agencies, let alone days in offices full of strangers’

Abi rested her fingertips on Drew’s forearm, ‘you really should read that stuff you got from human resources before scribbling your signature. I had the same paperwork, how do I know that? I read it before signing’

‘You’re right, I do skip through that stuff’ Drew said as he picked up his coffee.

She smiled as she openly checked out Drew, ‘strangers will probably not “make” you’ Abi said adding air quotes ‘I can help, polish your mannerisms a bit from time to time meanwhile watch the other girls in your office, parrot their mannerisms and phrases in-front of the mirror back at the apartment’

‘Good idea Abi, did I tell you I have found a voice coaching website?’ Drew repeated his last sentence

Abi’s eyes widened ‘how long can you keep that up? I hear you touch up your makeup right there at your desk’ Abi said

‘Makeup is little thing Pam suggested so that I don’t look new, How did you know about that? The voice I’m not sure’

‘Try and keep it up for the rest of the day’ Abi said as she waved her thumbs across her phone and smiled ‘I know the second anything happens in that office’

‘What do this voice? In the office?

Abi’s phone beeped, she checked the message and a big smile spread ‘that was your office manager, she thinks my suggestion you get your voice in character a good idea to prepare you for next week’

‘I cannot do that, they will laugh at me Abi’

‘Did anyone laugh when you arrived in women’s clothes? No, and they will not laugh at your new voice either’ Pam smiled, hey, that’s what I wanted to ask, did Pam suggest accompanying you this morning?’

‘Yes and I’m really grateful she did with you being busy today. I was really nervous, you know, first morning nerves and all, it was really kind of her. I tried to keep space between us so the photographer could get his shot, nice move by the way’ Drew smiled ‘I’ll be fine coming in alone the rest of the week if you need more shots’

‘That’s great, I didn’t mention it on purpose, you know posed shots and all’ Abbi said

Drew was feeling good the initial tension had subsided and they were back to normal ‘I promise not to notice photographers here on’

‘How about your roommates have they seen your new look yet?’

‘No way, they would not understand’

‘They will soon get over it when they see how cute you look, just imagine they might start hitting on you’ Abi giggled and began moving her head back and forth a little like a pigeon does when it walks, ‘would you?’ Abi sniggered

‘That’s not funny’ Drew had a serious look ‘and totally inappropriate workplace behaviour’

‘Lighten up, I was joking’ Abi sipped her coffee, ‘seriously though, I was annoyed at first but the hair style really suits you and colouring it jet black was a stroke of genius, has the style got a name?’

‘Berry Bob is the English translation’ Abi’s approval was making Drew feel good inside, ‘and it is so easy to keep in the morning, just a quick brush and I’m good to go’

‘Berry Bob’ Abi repeated with a smile as she put down some money on the bill ‘cute and so practical as well, you know Drew…’

‘What?’

‘In just a few days you have achieved what not many could pull off with months of planning and, I’m sure, nowhere near as convincingly’ Abi smiled, ‘We need to go, ten minutes left, the new girl must not be late back from lunch on her first day ’

They paused beside Abbi’s car. Drew leant in and they cheek kissed. Abi said, ‘you really are a fast learner, I suppose Pam taught you that as well’ as she shut the door and buzzed her window down.

As Drew stood on the footpath while he waited for her to drive off he said ‘a lot of online research but you and Pam have to take a lot of credit’

‘Glad you mentioned Pam yet again we had words today, no doubt she will tell you all about it before I get home tonight’ Abi raised her voice as she prepared to pull away from the kerb, ‘I am concerned by her interfering Drew it is affecting our project, you should move back to your own apartment’

Before Drew could reply Abi drove off. He did not like the way she had gotten so bossy in such a short time. As he neared the office his phone beeped; remember voice — Good girl

———//———

Drew was typing on his laptop when Abi got home ‘not sure where Pam is’ he said as Abi bounced over and, as if she always did, cheek kissed him.

‘Probably staying out of my way, I would not blame her after I was so horrid’ Abi said ‘sorry I was horrid to you at lunch, it’s that time of the month, you know how it is…’ she stopped and stared

‘What?’ Drew said

‘When have I ever said something like that to you? Or any man come to that’ Abi theatrically spoke into her phone as if making a voice memo ‘despite appearances do not forget Drew has a penis not a vagina’ then giggled, ‘lets be lazy — drink some wine and order in, girls night’

Pam arrived home and the three of them were well into the third bottle of wine when the pizza delivery man buzzed the door phone.

Abi was giggling as she insisted Drew would open the door to the regular delivery man ‘you have to swear to keep what is going to happen secret Drew, on your mum and sisters lives’

‘Don’t do it Abi’ Pam said

‘Oh I see it’s OK for you to have a little fun teaching Drew but not me’ Abi drained her glass ‘I’ll show the new girl how to give him a tip…now promise Drew’

Drew had seen Abi obnoxious drunk like this before and knew she would not give up on the idea. The first time had ended badly when Drew turned down her advances, whatever the game was it would be easier to just make the promise and be done with it.

As instructed Drew opened the door and Abi called out asking the delivery man to bring them through while she sorted out his tip.

‘Sure’ he said as Abi searched her purse.

‘Just hold them for a second, I can’t seem to find any change’ Abi said, ‘or would you like one of my special tips?’ The delivery man smiled as he nodded. Without a word Abi slid his jogging bottoms down just enough to take out his cock then taking a firm grasp she began to move her hand back and forwards.

The room was silent and just like a car crash neither Pam nor Drew could take their eyes away.

Abi watched his face as her hand steadily worked his cock, his hips thrust a little as a man does when he is on the verge.

Abi quickly pulled up his joggers as she gave several quick strokes before releasing his cock and taking the boxes of pizza. She smiled and giggled then said ‘lets eat, we don’t want the pizza to spoil as well’ as the wet patch spread on the delivery man’s joggers.

Pam and Drew had lost their appetite during the show, Abi was the only one eating ‘next time we can let him pick who gives him a tip’ she slurred ‘if you get lucky we won’t tell will we Pammy?'

By way of an apology Pam said ‘someone started it as a joke at a party ages ago, you know, a group of us drunk girls all egging each other on. Now Abi continues it to shock people’ Pam said after the delivery man had left, ‘by people I mean roommates, by roommates I mean you’

‘That’s it slag me off to my tranny Pammy’ Abi downed another wine and giggled ‘Pammy and her tranny. Lighten up you two, its just a harmless game not some sneaky attempt to manipulate someone’ Abi laughed manically to herself over some unknown private joke

‘Why are manipulates are like buses?’ Abi then repeated over and over, ‘we don’t know…say it together…say it’

‘We don’t know’

‘Because like a bus you don’t see the manipulate coming that does for you’ Abi said, giggled, drank another glass straight down and munched some pizza, ‘what do you say to that Pammy?’

Drew and Pam left Abi to the pizza and wine and headed to their respective rooms. Drew spent the evening reading through the copies of the documents he had signed without bothering to read while watching online how-to videos.

As Abi had said the paperwork was all pretty standard stuff. He cheered up when he reached the paragraph stating he was entitled to take time off for interviews.

———//———

First thing Drew asked his manager for the next day off as he had interviews booked and looked forward to a lazy day. Drew had emailed his CV to two agencies that specialised in short term placements which would suit his needs. While the immediate invites for interview and speed test were expected the pay schedules came as a shock. Basic typing and shorthand placements equaled his journalists pay grade, placements that took advantage of his Japanese and Ryukyuan language skills commanded far more. So much so that a three day translating placement would pay more than his months salary at The Herald.

Inwardly he cursed at the deal he had struck with Adam as it could easily mean there was no topping up needed to match the levels of his salary, Adam would virtually get the story free.

Drew had filled up his morning by arranging to meet his mother and sister for lunch, rather than keeping his undercover project secret he was proud to be the newspaper equivalent of a spy. He knew they would both be pleased to see him whatever he wore. Perhaps because of what he wore.

After work the day prior he had taken his suit to the one hour cleaners, Abi had already left for work when he came out of his room into what he had assumed was an empty apartment. To his surprise Pam sat drinking a coffee while looking at her phone.

‘No work today Pam?’ Drew asked, Abi had told him that Pam worked in ‘Events and Hospitality’ in some way, Abi had said that Pam was very vague about her work and said ‘easier not to ask’

‘After lunch for a couple of hours, a gallery event in the city’ Pam said, ‘when are the interviews?’

‘I will be leaving after coffee’ Drew said as he checked the wall clock

‘Can I tag along this morning, wait in a coffee shop and provide moral support, who am I kidding? you are so confident why would you need me’

‘I don’t think I need you today Pam but I would like your company, I would like that a lot’ Drew had wanted to ask, but did not want to seem needy

‘Will you be my plus one this afternoon?’ Pam said

‘Sure I am having lunch with my sister and mother, we could meet after’ Drew said then immediately felt horrid for excluding Pam after she had done so much for him, ‘Sorry that came out wrong, I would like you would like to come…it’s up to you. Family lunches can be…well…no or yes is fine’

‘You are wearing your interview suit to meet your family? Have you mentioned it?’ Pam had a thousand questions but two would have to do

‘They think I am the James Bond of the newspaper world’ Drew said avoiding the question.

‘Wild horses could not keep me from coming’ Pam said ‘you’ll never know how happy your invitation has made me’ she leant in for a cheek kiss

Pam noticed the instant change in Drew as he introduced his mother Himari and sister Ichika’ then introduced Pam as his good friend. They both spoke English, Ichika as flawlessly as Drew and Himari with a thick accent. Pam could see how proud they both were of Drew and how proud Drew was of them.

As they were finishing their coffees Himari said ‘seeing Ichika and Minami like this reminds me of when they were younger Pam, you see…’

Cutting her off Ichika spoke rapidly in what Pam assumed was Japanese then added ‘please forgive me Pam, that was rude of me. I said Pam does not have time today to hear old family tales Okasan’

Drew giggled ‘our mother has so many wonderful memories we could be entertained for the rest of the day, another time perhaps Okasan, Pam must return to work soon’

———//———

The smart west end gallery event was a champagne reception to launch a multi artist exhibition. Pam seemed to know everyone and introduced Drew to people variously as her roommate or associate or friend yet clearly took pleasure in addressing him as Minami with perfect Tokyo pronunciation when they were alone in the crowd. Drew was intrigued and played along.

During the afternoon Pam declined several requests to join people for dinner feeling no need to say more than ‘I so wish we could but…’ which seemed to satisfy. She made excuses for them both as they prepared to leave.

‘Discreetly take my hand as we near the door’ Pam said in a low voice. Drew did not speak instead he smiled and did a nod to Pam which allowed his hair to partially curtain his face when seen from the side. As Pam walked toward the door Drew fell in beside her matching step for step, two paces from the door Pam felt his pinky finger hook and hold hers. Neither of them looked back as they left.

Pam hailed a cab despite the gallery being a £100plus fare declaring ‘I’m not in a public transport mood’ as she paid the driver

Drew was pleased to finally get the chance to question Pam about the episode with the pizza delivery man. The full story was — the guy was at the time of the party the boyfriend of one of the guests. She had gotten drunk and decided to have a little fun embarrassing her boyfriend. Abi does not know that part of the story and seems to think it is funny to give him a hand job, well part of one mostly or if she is drunk enough…well you know. Pam laughed as she swore Drew to secrecy adding ‘the guy always looks so disappointed when I open the door and tip him a couple of pounds’

‘I’ll know to veto pizza here on in’ Drew said with a laugh.

‘Would you like to stop off somewhere for a quiet drink?’ Pam said, Drew nodded in agreement. The pub was exactly as Pam had requested from the driver, traditional, music free, private booths and mid-week quiet. They sat opposite sides of a booth well away from the bar, ‘I liked that game, the role play one, not the pizza one’ Pam said

‘OK the interview is about your favourite cities’ Drew said picking up on the unrequested request

‘You already know more about me than most Drew’ Pam smiled ‘and my friends this afternoon did not have any idea what you were doing, you naughty girl. I want to interview you’

Drew had imagined Pam had much she wanted to know even though she already knew far more than Abi. He had even tried drawing Abi out, making it easy for her to let slip that Pam had told her the secrets he had already revealed.

‘Tell me about your crossdressing past’ Pam said

Drew smiled as he transplained that he did not realise she wanted to play an interrogator, journalists are sneaky, rather than removing fingernails we befriend. Here is your starter question; you say “where did you grow up…”

Then I say — ‘I was born right here in England the year after my sister but I grew up in Tokyo when my fathers company transferred him home’ you say “how old were you when you left England”

I say — ‘I was ten, Ichika nearly twelve. We both found it hard at that age being separated from all of our friends and moving to a city where everything was new, strange. Without friends we mostly played games together after finishing our homework. Even today we are closer than most siblings’

‘Were you able to bring toys from England or did you have to find new games to play?’

Drew nodded and gave Pam a little “well done” smile, ‘we always had a dress-up trunk in the apartment for rainy days. Around that time we developed this new game where Ichika would introduce me to her schoolmates as her sister, before long we would all meet up in a coffee bar or go to the zoo during holidays while our parents were at work’

‘How did your schoolmates react Drew?’

‘You are getting the hang of this, I will have to watch myself around you’ Drew smiled ‘it really isn’t such a big thing there, some days I wore boys clothes but those days became fewer and fewer. By the time I began college I was living full time as a girl and that continued through until the year my father passed away and we moved back to our house in England. Winters here and summers in Tokyo was our plan, but you know how it is, work makes two city living difficult. Before I started at The Herald I began using an English name and began living as a man’

‘That lasted until I interviewed another crossdresser and his wife, I realised I could not continue living a lie Pam. Abi’s “undercover reporter” suggestion provided the perfect excuse for this’ Drew swept his hands down his sides, ‘I think at first Abi was suspicious at how readily I agreed to live as a woman for even a day’

‘What did Ichika stop your mum from saying at lunch?’

‘That is the question I would have asked Pam’ Drew said with a smile, ‘my mother or Okasan was going to tell you what she has told me every time we speak since that first weekend when I stayed at your apartment. She says to anyone that will listen that I am happier. At the very first opportunity she gets she will tell you that she is proud to have both daughters back. Ichika stopped her because she did not know you could be trusted with that information’

‘So everything has worked out perfectly’ Pam said

‘Things are still unfolding Pam, I think The Herald still has a few tricks to play on me.

‘Are you worried?’ Pam said

‘Do you remember after the mall when Abi threw my own phrase back at me? “who always says a good reporter observes and, without interfering, reports what he sees” from the end of this week I will officially be a freelance journalist which gives me the freedom write what I want for whoever I want. I am more a cautious observer than worried I would say Pam’

Drew did not have long to wait to discover “what happens next” He went to the reporters office to collect a few of his personal things from his desk. Fridays the reporters sloped off mid afternoon, the office was empty apart from one man. He was sitting at Drew’s desk, sitting in Drew’s chair, typing at Drew’s computer.

Drew introduced himself saying he had come to collect a few things.

‘Hi Drew I wondered if we would meet before you left, I’m your replacement Donald’ he said as he held out his hand, ‘I put your things in that box when I sarted’

‘I didn’t know I would be replaced…’ Drew glanced at the box

‘…so fast’ Donald finished Drews sentence, ‘chair was still warm when I sat in it Monday’

By the time Abi arrived at the apartment later Drew had already told Pam about his replacement.

Pam said ‘I’m just about to order some food.

‘shall we have pizza?’ Abi had a real smirk

‘We are having Chinese food, it is already decided’ Pam said

‘Are you sure? Lets ask Drew’ Abi’s smirk was still in residence

As they ate the food Drew said ‘I met Donald when I went to get some things from my desk’

Abi blushed as she purposely stuffed a massive forkful in her mouth and chewed slowly as she waved a finger ‘I’ve been dreading this moment Drew’ she managed as she swallowed ‘he just turned up Monday, I could not believe my eyes. Adam did not say a word just brought Donald in and introduced him as your replacement, my new boss. I know we would have been short while you were…like this’

‘Undercover don’t you mean Abi?’ Drew said ’Have you spoken to Adam’

‘I phoned him straight after and said to him what about Drew. Do you know what he said to me?He said you are not the owner of The Herald yet’ Abi looked close to tears, ‘at home you might be able to act the spoilt brat and get away with it but here at The Herald you are a junior reporter, now behave like one’

‘What did you say to that?’ Drew said

‘Nothing, I slammed the phone down and we haven’t spoken since. I report to that pig Donald, he is not like you Drew. He doesn’t want to work together like us, he orders me around like I am a dog not a colleague, not Adam’s daughter but a fucking dog’ all three of them had stopped eating, ‘now you know why I’ve been drunk every night this week and if there is any alcohol I will be tonight as well. I need to be unconscious’

‘How did my plans end up like this?’ Abi stood and went searching for alcohol, ‘if Adam, Donald, anyone from The fucking Herald phones I am not here’

‘What plans are you talking about Abi?’ Drew said

‘They will call your mobile’ Pam said in an attempt to be helpful

‘My work mobile is on my desk, no more being on call 24/7. Adam will soon learn what a spoilt brat I can be at work as well as at home’ Abi almost managed a little smile, ‘I’ll give you both the number of my new personal mobile in case you ever want to speak to me again after what I’ve caused’

Drew wanted to question Abi in detail about the plans she hinted at but knew it would be better to raise the subject when she was sober and free from self pity. He shook his head in disbelief wondering why she was so upset when it was him that had been replaced at The Herald.

After finding a half bottle of vodka Abi found her appetite again and began shovelling in noodles while talking between mouthfuls ‘I bet you need some good news Drew and you deserve it. Adam sent me an email authorising me to use my company credit card to “get you whatever you need” you as he put it. I forwarded a copy to accounts on Monday authorising your claim before Donald the pig got to grips with expenses’

Abi’s mood had had swung and as the vodka kicked in, now she seemed to be on top of the world at the thought of what she had done and what she had planned ‘how hell did you manage to spend nearly £1000 on underwear Drew?’ Abi giggled, ‘no don’t tell me. Show me how tomorrow. We are going clothes shopping first thing in the morning, one interview suit is not enough for a tranny and daddy has instructed his spoilt daughter to”get you whatever you need” no arguments’

‘Please don’t call me that Abi’ Drew said

‘I’ll stop when…’ Abi murmured as her eyelids began to close.

Unlike Abi who had slipped into a vodka coma Drew could not sleep. The last thing Abi had said before Drew and Pam dumped her on her bed kept turning over in his mind “I’ll stop when” when what he wondered.

The apartment was still silent when Drew quietly slipped out next morning to telephone Angela without a chance of being overheard. Abi had seen the receipt that he left in his desk, he should be annoyed she pried but he was pleased how good an investigative reporter Abi had become.

Drew dialled Angela acting as if it were just for a chat he said how nice it was to see her again after so long away and he thanked her for her help ‘I just wanted to say how comfortable everything is, you know, after so long I was expecting it to take some getting used to’

‘Your friend said how pleased you were’ Angela said, ‘although she only bought one sale bra’

Drew smiled at solving one part of the mystery so easily but just to confirm he said ‘I’ve told so many people was it June or Betty or…’ He had run out of names to make up and let the silence hang

‘That is so kind, I’ll look forward to plenty of new customers, but no it’s Abi I am talking about’

Drew laughed lightly down the line ‘I would not be surprised if she was asking about the breast forms you sell’

‘She seemed fascinated by them when I finally showed her’ Angela returned the little laugh ‘said she was too shy to ask to see yours. I said that she should ask, I know how you trannys like showing them off. Abi let slip you keep a blog but clammed up when I asked about it, can you send me a link Drew?’

“Angela, how many times must I tell you, I am not. I just dress…’

Angela cut in as a bell dinged somewhere ‘Customer, must go, speak soon…’

The phone disconnected but Drew still held the phone to his ear as if he were waiting for some unknown voice to speak. He was wondering how Abi knew about his blog, it must be the English one he realised and if Abi had read that she would know his innermost thoughts.

With his head spinning Drew walked back to the apartment carrying fresh croissants from Pam’s favourite little bakery.

‘Where did you get these’ Pam said as she tore into her second

‘The little bakery, I wanted to…no I mean, I needed to please you. It makes me happy’

‘Good girl, always keen to please, you know I would miss you if you left Drew’

‘To go shopping?’

‘Shopping? No, not shopping, I’m thinking long-term’ Pam smiled ‘don’t think I’m hitting on you. I am talking like that sitcom where a gay guy lives with two women. Don’t interrupt Drew, OK, OK I know you are not gay, I know you say you are not a tranny just someone…’ Pam fell silent as she saw a surprisingly bright eyed Abi standing in the doorway, ‘good morning Abi, how long have you been there?’

Drew spun around as Abi said ‘long enough to know a roommates meeting is number one on today’s to-do list. Shopping can wait’

The dining room table had bottles of water and a big pot of coffee set out just like a conference table. Drew said ‘as this might be mostly about me let me go first. I know you have read my blog Abi and I am keen to know for how long you have known and how you discovered it’

‘First I’ll answer “how” as that is the simple part, leaving your personal cell on your desk in a reporters office was both cruel and careless. Cruel to tempt me like that. Careless using the same password for your private and work mobiles, an act of foolishness that deserved you be punished by my snooping on your secrets.

You know what I found Drew but Pam may not so I will explain.

I cried endless times while reading what you wrote.  Almost daily your blog revealed how miserable living as a man made you, how your roommates stoped you releasing the real you at home for even a few hours, how you wished you could time travel back to Tokyo where the real Drew or whatever your name is there had once been so free.

When I read how envious you were of Geoff and Diane Willcott's lives to the extent of sacrificing your own career to protect them by writing a lead article in support instead of the hatchet job you were instructed to do I knew I couldn’t wait any longer to act.

The thing with me dressing as a man was a ruse. Rather than being out having interviews I hid under a long coat until I was inside The Herald building then sneaked back here and changed clothes. When I suggested you go undercover your token objections were so thin you made sure there was no risk of my saying “forget it”

How many men do you know Drew who would willingly rush into what is supposedly a couple of weeks living as a transgender person without a single question about what happens after the two weeks ends. Or even crossdress for a weekend for that matter?

And while I am outing people…

How many other women do you know Pam would want a man who dresses in women’s clothes to be a roommate? A woman who would pressure me to get the undercover reporter to take the room of her transgender roommate who has moved out, even though she pretends Naomi is coming back.

I know you have every right to say I am scheming and interfering but in my defence I say there aren’t many people on this planet as well suited to each other as you two.

Now can we please go shopping.
